Dashboard application is designed to act as host to Widgets. It is a semi-transparent layer over the desktop, on which the widget icons reside. As soon as a widget is invoked, the information and utility associated with the widget appears on the Dashboard. The Dashboard can be activated by pressing hot keys, mouse button or placing the mouse or cursor on some pre-assigned part of the user’s screen.

The applications on Dashboard, also known as Widgets, are created using common languages used for creating websites like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Various operating software like Mac OS come with pre-assigned WebKit application that helps in designing the Dashboard and placing widgets on them. Dashboard applications can be created by compiling the following files:

• HTML file that appears as Widget on the Dashboard
• CSS file, that decides the appearance and look of the widget and is used in conjugation with HTML file
• The JavaScript file
• There is a property list “info.plist” that stores and maintains the information and properties of the Dashboard applications
• The background image and the icon used to activate the files of the widgets
